Do you renovate, tear down, and build new, or do you move?

  • Is it worth renovating? Are there advantages to renovating (existing home built under grand fathered by laws etc.)
  • What are the conditions and features of the existing building?
  • What are the pros and cons of each option, and what best serves your vision, budget, and longevity in the home, taking into consideration if is this to be a “forever” home, first home, or investment home – as all will have different investment build criteria.
"There are so many options how to work with various parties involved in a home that is why is important to streamline the process to know who is responsible for what. That is why a project manager could be very helpful to get all the answers in one place to make an educated and informed decision."

When you are ready to begin detailed planning for your project, research the professionals in your area by talking to family, friends, and neighbours, checking with the HAVAN (www.havan.ca) and other professional organizations. Research past projects, style of work, and the municipalities where they have worked. Once you have short-listed two or three possible contractors, call them for a consultation.
